IronMarbs 70.3 - 29 April 2018

IronMarbs 70.3 ATAC - Thanks for all the “Good luck” and “smash it” messages. Great to see so much support roll in when these events come round. It was the inaugural Ironman for this venue and they didn’t disappoint. Well organised and great course. Puerto Banus was outstanding Location and the whole town showed up for support. ATAC’s first away team was Alun Rees, Paul Roberts, Jason Pritchard, John Jones, Mark Thomas, Joe Adams, Ian Slaven and Jason Murphy ... with amazing support from the newly formed “ATAC WAGs” - Elin x 2, Nerys x 2, Lowri, Aranwen, Rhian and Claire. Unfortunately, we had a few drop out before the weekend but I’m sure the next trip will be bigger again. The hotel was fantastic and upgraded the team to a penthouse suite with jacuzzi. 😎 JJ - we need to sign up a Spaniard for next year ... even if it’s just for ordering room service.
Swim - a crazy swell made it an intimidating first 1k to the turnaround buoy, not that we could see them. There were no complaints when they cut it to a mile for safety reasons.

Bike - so this was a mixed bag, involving 2 main long climbs which made for long sweeping descents on the return. Great surfaces and very well marshalled. Stunning views down over the Costa del Sol. The nutrition sponsor switch from PowerBar to Enervit was a disappointment - the course water bottles didn’t fit into Bike cages! (Dont want to be that guy in the race debrief 😬). Thankfully, no accidents or mechanicals for us. All completed the tough course in good times but maybe paid the price for those hills.
Run - flat as you could get, 2 lap course, with heaps of support the whole way around ... and a few Welsh flags in amongst it. Great to see the girls shouting, screaming and waving at every opportunity ... and for a moment, they were sober. Despite a few gruelling moments of doubt, all made it around to collect that first Ironman Marbella 70.3 medal and some well deserved beers in the finishers tent (sorry Iron Dome)
Big shout out to the other South Wales friends involved - @noelwyn Noelwyn Daniel looked like he could have done another lap with support from the folks. Meilyr and Steffan Hughes - great show and support from Mam and Dad. Celtic Tri and the Team Arnold Big Cog contingent. A walk in the park for you guys. (Ginge needs to work on his wetsuit skills). Hope the birthday celebrations continue.
Next year? We’re thinking Mallorca 70.3 in May 😎
